Head Case

Do you like your helmet? If so I'd like to know about it! I'm thinking about buying a brain bucket but what to buy and what are the pros and cons?

Since I'm skint it'll have to be quite cheap so my budget is something like a miserly £35 :-(

I've heard that the best advice is to actually try out models in one of those ye olde shoppe things, so I'll probably do that if I can make a shortlist of models beforehand. I've heard that a badly-fitting helmet can do more damage in an accident than not wearing one at all so this seems excellent advice.

Apparently Specialised head cases are better for folks with narrower heads and Giros are better for folks with round ones. I'll be looking for a Giro then :-)

Helmets I've seen that I liked were: Specialized 03 Enduro Pro and Giro Animas.

What helmet would you recommend or what should I know about or avoid?

My first bike helmet was a Bell Image, which coast about £30 in 1995(ish). Next up was a cheap Halfords-own model, and I'm now using a Trek Somethingorother.

All of them were pretty comfortable, the newer ones just look a little better, are lighter and better ventilated.

I'd think, at the speeds that impacts are likely to happen, even a badly fitted helmet would be better than no helmet. But, you'd probably not wear a helmet if it was uncomfortable, heavy or sweaty.

Your best bet would be to go along to a bike shop (a proper one) with a budget in mind and try on everything that's within your budget. Just buy the best fitting; if it's a brand, it'll be fine.

I always wear my helmet, like a good boy.

Spotted this nowadays rare Giro Animas 2003 helmet at knocked down price but the problem would be that I'd not be able to try it on in advance. Not sure whether to just order it anyway since I could always return it if it's uncomfortable.

Went to Iron Horse Cyclery today and found a really nice fit with a Giro Animas, extremely comfy and quite cosy! I didn't buy one as they only had yellow in stock but I'm waiting for a call-back confirming that they will be getting new stock in.
