According to the highway code, we can cycle in the left-hand lane around roundabouts, whether we are going left, or straight-on or right. That should have the same effect, but without the block paving making it explicit. I wouldn't fancy that myself, though.I'm not a big fan of cycle lanes, as they reinforce drivers' views that bikes "shouldn't be on the road", making it more dangerous for those that don't use them. Of course, they're probably the only way to get less confident people to ride their bike instead of taking the car.
It seems that such a roundabout exists in York (according to Ryland Jones of Sustrans). Maybe we should construct a day out around a visit to this one day!
